If there is a single most device that we have with us all the time is a smartphone. People call it "Smart Phone" because unlike its predecessor it can do so many things like browsing the internet, watching videos, capturing pictures, playing games, sending emails and of course making calls. Not only that, thanks to "apps" ecosystem, you can also extend the functionality of your smartphones by installing third-party apps on your device.
Why Smartphones are no longer phones:
So, what is wrong with modern-day smartphones? The problem is that since it is able to do so many things, it has the ability to get you hooked up with it for several hours at once.
Some people use smartphones for games while some use it entirely for business. Some people use it to connect with their friends and browse social media for hours at once.
The point I am trying to make is, our requirements are different, but we all are using the same generic device to get things done. Since the smartphone has very broad usage, it is not optimised for any one of them. If there is anything smartphones are good at, it is to steal away our attention.
Smartphone screens are getting better day after day. The whole point of having a screen on any device is to display some information. Today, the screen even on entry-level smartphones is more than enough to display the information you need, however, it might not be as good for media consumption, and that's what smartphone companies are optimising/improving. With every new generation of the device, the screen gets bigger and better. I feel the problem is only going to get worse with upcoming foldable smartphones. With foldable technology, you can have a screen size of portable laptop in your pocket. Even today, the more expensive device you get, the better screen it has, and the better it is suitable for media consumption on the go.
The Screen of the Smartphone can display vivid pictures and colours which we can't see in the real world. Have you ever seen such bright vivid colours in real-life around you? By showing us very bright colours with very high contrast, it makes real-world look very "dull". That's the reason why the real world starts to look uninteresting for people who are addicted to smartphones.
In conclusion, Smartphones have evolved to the point that now calling them phone would be misleading. It has become Smart Entertainment Device. Using smartphones to make calls is like driving a Ferrari for bringing groceries. Doesn't makes any sense at all.
